Academic Coaching
Why the need?
University Is Different Than High School
As students progress from high school into post-secondary education, they quickly realize that the two are drastically different. Where high school is very structured and teachers continuously track academic progress, university fundamentally puts the onus solely on the student. As a result, new students often feel overwhelmed with the increased course load and understanding of how to effectively manage their time.
What are the facts?
Expectations Are Not Always Reality
Although it is anticipated that most students in university will see a drop in their grades as compared to high school, the most dramatic decrease is with students who achieved a 90+ average in high school. Maclean's conducted a study that found students experienced a drop of 11.9 points as they entered post-secondary education (Jerema, 2010). Therefore, it is imperative that students adequately prepare for university to keep scholarships, remain off academic probation, and give themselves the best opportunity to enter professional programs.
What will I learn?
Coaching Is Not Tutoring
Academic coaching is not subject specific instruction but rather focuses on giving students the required tools to succeed in any subject. The key fundamentals associated with academic coaching involves perfecting learning strategies and time management. Although the coaching is tailored for each student, typical areas that are covered include techniques for improving reading comprehension, writing skills, lecture note taking, and studying for any type of exam.
How does it work?
Every Student Is Different
Each academic coaching session is completely customized. Since every student has different strengths and weaknesses, the first step is an initial meeting with your academic coach to identify areas of focus. Even during the initial meeting your coach will start helping you refine your skills utilizing your current high school curriculum. Follow-up periodic meetings with your coach further enhances your learning strategy techniques and ensure adequate preparation for post-secondary education.
“Academic coaching is a new and evolving profession that aims to help students succeed in education.”
